Tue-Thur 18 - 20 March 2008 - Macon Music Hall of Fame & Stone Mountain & Georgia Aquarium

Tue-Thur 18 - 20 March 2008
- We departed Perry,Georgia traveling a few short miles northward to Macon, Georgia. We stopped to visit the Macon Music Hall of Fame, home to many favorite artists of the Blues. If you like music, this is a must-stop-see museum. It is well arranged, inviting and lets you enjoy the history of the musicians of Georgia. Names like Otis Redding, Sam Cook, Booker T & the MG's, Little Richard, The Allman Brothers, Billy Joe Royal and Joe Williams among many; plus Trisha Yearwood, Alan Jackson for the country touch.

After visiting the museum we continued on to Stone Mountain, Georgia. We stayed at the park, which is about 30 miles east of downtown Atlanta. The campground is arranged along the lake shore so everyone has an incredible view. We were almost straight across the lake from the lodge at the base of Stone Mountain. During the warm season, shuttle boats run between the docks at the campground and the lodge. No need to drive around to visit the attractions at the park or to hike up the granite mountainside. We did hike up; it is 1.3 miles and I caught up with Joe on the top a half hour after he arrived. I needed many more rest breaks whilst moving upward. Coming down is easy for these old legs and that only took a few minutes. The only stops on the way down were to take pictures and look at the flora and fauna. We highly recommend this area for location, serenity, the rock, hiking trails, peace n quiet, golfing, biking, fishing, and just watching and listening. The main attraction at Stone Mountain is the carving on one side of the mountain of General Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson. At the base of the mountain, near the carving is a small old western-type village built with a variety of choices...old time theatre, food, weaving, candle making and soon a theme park with rides. One evening I sat outside and watched the cardinals...er, make that heard them rooting around for the perfect twig for their nest and tasty morsel for their belly. The boys are quite loud when romancing their ladies.

Two days after the tornado hit Atlanta we were headed downtown to go to the Georgia Aquarium...presently the worlds largest. It sure seemed that way. We took pictures of some buildngs and you can see the broken windows. The aquarium was fantastic and we stayed until they kicked out at closing. Another must-see if you like aquariums. Please note fellow travelers, do not take your tow vehicle into the aquarium garage; it does not fit. Use the parking lots on the streets surrounding the aquarium; plus, they are more reasonably priced than parking at the aquarium.

Enjoy the pictures!
